DC This Week Roundup – Old Betrayals

Titans cover, via DC Comics.

Titans – John Layman, Writer; Pete Woods, Artist

Ray – 8/10

Ray: The reveal that Terra was behind the attack on the Titans since this run began raised the emotional stakes a lot – and it’s interesting to see a story recast her as the main villain, even forcing Deathstroke to work under her for a change. We pick up already in progress, as the Titans have gotten their heads handed to them by her team. As they sort out their failed mission, Vanadia is sidelined as Cyborg checks out her diagnostics. But she makes the mistake of trying to get revenge on Terra’s squad herself – and quickly finds herself being manipulated by the villainess as she recasts her own betrayal of the team as them victimizing her. There’s some good dialogue among the Titans as well, although the Roy/Donna romantic drama is getting a little old. This issue leads up to yet another big-scale battle, but the real highlight here is Terra herself, who’s a genuinely menacing villain.

Catwoman cover, via DC Comics.

Catwoman – Torunn Gronbekk, Writer; Danielo Beyruth, Artist; Patricio Delpeche, Colorist

Ray – 8.5/10

Ray: The sins of Selina’s past are coming back to haunt her, and this issue is sort of the calm before the storm – and the storm coming in like a tsunami. A prelude as she reunites with Shota has some nice emotional moments, but it’s all just leading into her latest infiltration mission into the lair of the Belovs. There’s just one problem – she’s not setting the trap this time. The entire mansion is waiting for her, and they’ve captured one of the few people she cares about in this life, the naive Suzy Sinner. Selina’s pulled Suzy into “Evie”’s world, and now it’s threatening her life. But there’s one more big twist to this issue that throws the whole series so far for a loop. This series still feels pretty far afield from anything related to the DCU, with it reminding me more of Greg Rucka’s work at times, but this is one of the stronger issues recently and sets up a huge new chapter next issue.
