Ray: While the flagship Green Lantern book seems to be focused on larger-scale epic adventures, this title manages to take some of the newer lanterns and put them into grittier but no-less-compelling stories. Last issue saw Simon, Keli, and Ellie get caught up in a grift at a shady underground space mall. The arms dealer they were dealing with crossed them and trapped them all in a mental maze, where each of them are confronted with their own worst memories. But the memories are twisted somehow – the alien Keli got her gauntlet from begs her not to take it, and Simon watches his friend die. As Ellie tries to find their way out, she discovers a hidden secret within Keli’s mind – possibly tied to Keli’s late grandmother, who died during her early adventures as Teen Lantern. And while they do make it out eventually, it’s clear this subplot is well away from resolved.
And then there’s the lighter but equally entertaining subplot involving Guy Gardner and his young Lantern trainee, Narf. The timid little cat-boy seems at first to be a load that Guy tries to keep alive as they deal with the threat of Evil Star and try to escape the base after a bounty is called in on them. So guy calls in a favor from an old friend – Space Cabbie, who is one of the funniest characters in the DCU as a concept. He’s just some blue-collar dude who drives a spaceship that looks like a yellow cab, and throws himself into danger because it’s a living. Along the way, Narf discovers some surprising hidden strengths, and we get a great chase segment. I’ve come to the conclusion that just about every major franchise at DC should have two titles, because that’s the only way we get oddball, smaller-scale stories like this that really flesh out the whole cast.
