The Forgotten Chinese Version of The Karate Kid 2010 Is a Relic of a Bygone Time

In “Never Say Never,” the title track for his 2010 musical redux of The Karate Kid, Jaden Smith raps, “No pun intended, was raised by the power of Will.” It’s a multi-level easter egg for the film. After all, the remake was produced by his parents, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. As a consequence, […]

The Life of Chuck Review: Stephen King and Mike Flanagan Were Made for Each Other

People who call Stephen King a horror writer get him all wrong. There are horrible, terrifying things that happen in his stories, sure. Most of them, anyway. But no matter how ghoulish, how gruelling things become in splashes of pig’s blood, or flashes of clown’s makeup, those macabre charms are fleeting. They’re interstitial selling points […]

The Phoenician Scheme Review: Wes Anderson’s Best Movie in Over a Decade

Titans of industry cannot come to terms. Despite the literal gap between them being a matter of feet—maybe 30 or so by my count—when their two locomotives come to a standstill in a tunnel with miles of track in either direction, Zsa-zsa Korda (Benicio del Toro, tyrannical, avuncular) is unable to bridge the final inches […]

Mission: Impossible Villians, Ranked

The Mission: Impossible franchise is built on intense Tom Cruise stares, convoluted plot twists and reveals, and incredible stunts. It is not, however, built on compelling stories. Most of the Mission movies are about rogue agents and ill-defined MacGuffins, a repetition that would be annoying if anyone cared about the plots. However, lack of plot […]

Ranking Phase Five of The Marvel Cinematic Universe

Although I’ve never read many comics outside of a few Spider-man issues back in the 1980s, The Marvel Cinematic Universe has turned me into a huge Marvel nerd. With The Thunderbolts* having made it to theaters this month, Marvel has closed out Phase 5 of their films, and only one of the eight Phase 5 Disney Plus shows remains: Ironheart premieres on June 24th. With Phase 5 now wrapping up, it seems an opportune time to review and rank the six films and seven available television shows in The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5.
